Lecture on an artistic residency in Xinjiang (China), Mongolia, and Buryatia (Russia)

Lecture · 11. 07. 2017 - 12. 08. 2017

As part of the Advanced Painting Course at the Fundación Santa María de Albarracín and the scholarship program of the Complutense University of Madrid (Valverde de los Arroyos Scholarship), I delivered the lecture RECORDS.

“This lecture presents my current project: an exploration of the first phase of fieldwork I conducted during a recent four-month residency in Xinjiang (China), Mongolia, and Buryatia (Russia).

RECORDS is also the title of the 13 digital notebooks I produced during that residency, comprising photographs, text, and drawings. These RECORDS offer a direct, immediate engagement with the landscape—sketched in situ, reflecting on each context. I edited and published them while still in the field.

In the lecture, I revisit the ideas outlined in the RECORDS and reflect on their significance in the development of my painting during the second phase of the project, carried out in the studio. The presentation format and the subsequent discussion allowed me to articulate aloud thoughts that remained undeveloped in the notebooks.

At the conclusion of both talks, we engaged in a very interesting discussion, delving into the personal and human dimension of the journey and its influence on my painting and perception of the territory.

I am grateful to the director of the Albarracín Course—Dr. Paloma Peláez Bravo—and to the director of the Valverde Scholarship—Dr. Dora Piñón—for inviting me to be part of their program.”
