I take part in the Artistic and Scientific Residency Program “The Arctic Circle” to record the Arctic desert.

Artistic Residency · Svalbard · 01. 04. 2022 - 24. 04. 2022

During April, I participated in an expedition with the Artistic and Scientific Residency Program “The Arctic Circle” to record the Arctic desert.

This program brings together each year people conducting scientific or artistic research about the Arctic.

We sailed from Tromsø to the northern part of Spitsbergen Island (Svalbard archipelago), aboard a three-masted schooner. During the journey, I made 400 painting records and edited and published five digital notebooks titled LOOSE SHEETS.

In these notebooks I recount how I prepared to work in the field; I speak of the atmosphere of the place, the day-to-day circumstances, and I refer to my companions and life on the ship.

LOOSE SHEETS reflect the errors, the impact, and the vibration of each day; they are direct notes, made outdoors; raw material, without adornments. They are loose sheets.

Since 2016, through painting, I have studied the behavior of nature in territories expressed in their essential forms. Raw, arid, minimally altered territories; without adornments and nothing to make them more approachable.

The starting point of this project — titled RECORDS — was a long residency in regions of desert, steppe, and tundra in Xinjiang (China), Mongolia, and Buryatia (Russia). With the records from the Arctic desert, I begin a new phase of research.
