On October 30, at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, the new book The Mountain and the Art (Fórcola, 2017) by geographer, mountaineer, and professor Eduardo Martínez de Pisón was presented. The introduction was made by journalist and Editor-in-Chief of ABC Cultural, Laura Revuelta, and the event featured interventions by the Director of the Residencia, Alicia Gómez Navarro, and Francisco Javier Jiménez, founder and director of the editorial house Fórcola.

In its pages, Martínez de Pisón explores landscape as an integral part of culture, reflecting on the mountain through the perspectives and interpretations of painters, musicians, and writers. The RECORDS painting project is cited in the chapter dedicated to painting.

In a recent interview, the author explains:

“…this book is the culmination of a journey of coexistence, understanding, and contemplation of the mountains. As a geographer devoted to these landscapes, I lacked the cultural side—and especially the artistic dimension—the contemplation of mountains by great figures in the arts, who have created a mirror, another mountain parallel to the real mountain, one you cannot do without.1

The work has been published by the Fórcola imprint—founded in 2007 by Francisco Javier Jiménez and still helmed by him. Fórcola is a publishing project “that carries out what can be called “editorial editing”: catalog styling that is coherent, identifiable, rigorous, and thorough—with a vocation for the future, aesthetic ambition, and cultural depth.2” It is no coincidence that The Mountain and the Art found its platform here.

I am deeply grateful for Martínez de Pisón’s reference to my work and that my name appears in the onomastic index of this volume. Shortly after returning from my residency in northwest China and Mongolia, I attended one of his lectures, where I met him in person for the first time. I shared my project with him and presented the digital documents and drawings created during that journey.

Martínez de Pisón’s reflections—his profound gaze toward the territory and toward art—enrich my painting. He is a mountaineer, geographer, professor, and essayist. Furthermore, he consistently approaches all artistic disciplines, showing interest in how artists interpret a landscape, a mountain, or a glacier.

In the same interview, Martínez de Pisón says: “…the mountain is not only a physical ascent, but also almost a spiritual ascent—of the mountain itself and of yourself.3” As a painter, I feel that he approaches painting—and all expressions of art—with this same sensitivity, with deep human and spiritual insight. If that’s the case… how could his insights not enrich my painting?”
